On the early morning of April 18, 1906, San Francisco was jolted awake by a terrifying 7.9 magnitude earthquake. The earth cracked, buildings crumbled, and chaos erupted in an instant. But the tremors were just the beginning—fires soon spread across the city, fueled by ruptured gas lines and broken water mains, which left firefighters helpless.

Over 3,000 people lost their lives, and nearly 80% of the city was destroyed. Wooden homes splintered, brick buildings collapsed like sandcastles, and smoke darkened the skies for days. Horse-drawn carts carried the wounded, while survivors camped in makeshift tents in parks.

Yet, out of this catastrophe emerged a spirit of resilience. San Franciscans banded together, rebuilding their city stronger and more beautiful than before. It remains one of the deadliest natural disasters in U.S. history and a turning point for urban development and emergency preparedness.
