On April 19, 1897, just fifteen brave souls gathered in Ashland, Massachusetts, to take part in what would become the world’s oldest annual marathon—the Boston Marathon. Inspired by the revival of the marathon race in the first modern Olympic Games just a year earlier, organizers wanted to bring the spirit of ancient athleticism to the streets of Boston.
The 24.5-mile race ended in downtown Boston, with John J. McDermott of New York emerging victorious, clocking in at 2 hours, 55 minutes, and 10 seconds. The event, modest at first, would grow into a global phenomenon, with over 30,000 runners now pounding the pavement every year.
