May 30, 1989 – The "Goddess of Democracy" Rises in Tiananmen Square

On this day, Chinese student protesters revealed the Goddess of Democracy, a towering 10-meter sculpture fashioned out of foam and papier-mâché. Designed to resemble the Statue of Liberty, it was erected directly facing the massive portrait of Mao Zedong, creating a striking visual symbol of the demand for political reform and freedom. Though it stood for just a few days before being destroyed by the military crackdown, the statue became an enduring icon of resistance and the universal yearning for liberty.
