On May 27, 1937, San Francisco celebrated the grand pedestrian opening of the Golden Gate Bridge. For one day only, before cars took over, more than 200,000 people walked, danced, roller-skated—even stilt-walked—across the iconic red suspension bridge. It symbolized not just a feat of engineering, but a deep connection between communities once divided by the bay. At the time, it was the longest and tallest suspension bridge in the world—an Art Deco titan over the Pacific mist.
