On May 19, 1991, more than 83% of eligible Croatians went to the polls in a historic referendum. Over 90% voted in favor of seceding from the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. This marked a critical turning point in the breakup of Yugoslavia and launched Croatia’s journey toward full sovereignty.

The referendum was held amid rising ethnic tensions and pressure from the central Yugoslav government. Just weeks later, Croatia formally declared independence, triggering a brutal conflict that would last for years. Despite the hardship, the vote became a defining symbol of national identity and self-determination.
