In the Nevada desert city of Henderson, a plant belonging to the Pacific Engineering and Production Company of Nevada (PEPCON) exploded in a chain reaction of massive blasts. The facility stored large amounts of ammonium perchlorate—a powerful rocket fuel oxidizer. A fire, believed to have been sparked by welding work, triggered two cataclysmic explosions, one of which was equivalent to a small nuclear blast. The shockwave shattered windows across Las Vegas (10 miles away), injured over 300 people, and caused two deaths. The disaster became a textbook case on industrial safety and disaster preparedness.
