On April 16, 1943, Swiss chemist Albert Hofmann made an unexpected breakthrough—literally inside his own mind. While working at the Sandoz Laboratories in Basel, he unintentionally absorbed a tiny amount of a compound he'd synthesized years earlier: lysergic acid diethylamide, better known as LSD.

Hofmann experienced intense, dreamlike visuals and surreal sensations—the first-ever acid trip. Curious about the effects, he famously took a deliberate dose three days later and rode home on his bicycle, launching what’s now remembered as “Bicycle Day.”

Though originally developed to aid circulation and breathing, LSD would go on to influence neuroscience, psychotherapy, and 1960s counterculture in massive ways. It opened doors to understanding consciousness—and sparked decades of both fascination and controversy.
