March 27, 1977 – The Tenerife Airport Disaster
On this fateful day, tragedy struck when two Boeing 747 jumbo jets — operated by KLM and Pan Am — collided on the runway of Los Rodeos Airport (now Tenerife North Airport) in the Canary Islands. Dense fog and a series of devastating miscommunications led to 583 fatalities, making it the deadliest aviation accident in history.
Neither aircraft was even supposed to be there. A terrorist bombing at nearby Gran Canaria airport had rerouted them. The resulting congestion and weather delays created a pressure cooker situation. Misheard radio commands, outdated protocols, and cockpit confusion caused KLM’s plane to take off while Pan Am's aircraft was still taxiing on the same runway.
This horrific event sparked major global reforms in aviation communication, including:
Clearer cockpit phraseology
Standardized English language use in international airspace
Greater emphasis on crew resource management (CRM)
It remains a sobering lesson that reshaped how pilots and air traffic controllers communicate under pressure.
